Problem/Statement
In this activity we were instructed to implement NAND only then a NOR only Combinational logic to create a voting booth monitoring system. Where the booth can only be used if the booth on either side is unoccupied. The monitoring system has for inputs, and two outputs. Whenever a voting booth is occupied the corresponding input is a (1). The first output, Booth, is a one whenever a voting booth is available. The second output Alarm, is a one whenever the privacy rule is violated.
Brainstorming/CalculationsTo obtain the minterm equation for the Booth and Alarm, K-Mapping was used. For the sake of time the truth table and K-Mapping was done for us. K-Mapping or Karnaugh Mapping, is a technique used to simplify logic equations much quicker and for me simpler. It is much easier to remember than Boolean Algebra and a lot faster than it too. The steps for K-Mapping are below.
K-Mapping: 1) create a truth table like so.. 2) Create a new table in this format, then use the logic equation from the truth table and place a (1) in the box that makes the equation true. For example, the one in the top left box mean the minterm A'B'C'D' is in the logic equation.
3) As they have done in the picture above, circle the adjacent cells that have the same term. If there is an "X" it may the term you wish.
4) Now take a look at the boxes you have circled. If they contain for example, the top row is circled, All of the C's and D's will cancel out because C' & C eliminate each other, same with the D's. 5) Write the left over minterms in a new simplified logic equation. Booth=A'B' + C'D' Alarm=AB+BC+CD |
SketchesNAND & NOR DesignNAND and NOR gates are known as universal gates. This means that they can be used for any other type of gate. In the following pictures it shows how NAND then how NOR can be used to create AND or OR gates. They already have an inverter. NAND and NOR gates decrease the cost of building a circuit and because they are universal they are very beneficial. In this activity we were able to compare NAND and NOR, in some cases NAND is a lot easier to use compared to NOR and its the same with the other way around..

MultiSim To Final Product
After converting the Booth and Alarm to NAND and NOR from AOI logic, a MultiSim version was created, then the circuit was bread boarded. as shown below.
