3.3.2 '163 Counters
Objective: 3.3.2
We were instructed to enter a 4-Bit Binary Up counter that was designed to count from 2-9 into MultiSim (a CDS program). The counter was designed with the 74LS163 MSI Counter. This integrated circuit has a preloadable count start, a synchronous load and clear, two count enable inputs, and a carry-out signal for counter cascading.
AdvantagesAn advantage of using the '163 integrated circuit compared to using discrete flip flops and gates is
that 1)it is alot faster to use 2)there is no ripple effect 2) it has a data load 3)it is easier to understand! |
DisadvantagesThere is one main disadvantage to using a '163 integrated circuit, that is that they cannot count down. They are limited to counting up.
